Sheriff Deputy Resigns After DWI Arrest

LATEST NEWS: SEPTEMBER 2011, New Hanover, North Carolina—A deputy with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has resigned after being arrested over the Labor Day weekend on a drunken driving charge.

Lt. Lawrence Miller, 44, was stopped at a Labor Day weekend checkpoint by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Authorities say he was charged with DWI. Miller, who had worked with the sheriff’s department for 19 years was in the patrol unit.

Sgt. Jerry Brewer reported that Miller resigned before an internal investigation into the matter was concluded. “I continue to stand firm on my position concerning alcohol-related incidents,” Sheriff Ed McMahon stated in a press release.

Labor Day checkpoints, conducted between Thursday and Sunday, charged 85 drivers with drunk driving. The checkpoints were part of a targeted enforcement campaign dubbed Operation Bad Company.
