JUNE 2011, Albuquerque, New Mexico—Police and city officials said that an airport employee driving his city-issued SUV was arrested and charged with DWI last weekend. Norman Dave Norman, associate director of operations at the Albuquerque International Sunport, was stopped in a city-owned vehicle about 11 p.m. Sunday . According to the police report and a complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, Norman, 61, was charged with first-offense DWI and careless driving after he almost struck another vehicle. “Norman is now on paid administrative leave. He could face termination or other discipline,” said Rob Perry, Albuquerque‘s chief administrative officer. The disciplinary process, will offer Norman a chance to give his side of events, and is expected to take three to five days. “There is to be absolutely no alcohol consumption when using a city vehicle,” Perry said. Police said they smelled alcohol and arrested Norman after a field sobriety test. A breath test measured his blood-alcohol content at 0.09 percent, according to a police report. The presumed level of intoxication for a driver in New Mexico is 0.08. Norman makes $76,565 a year. He helps oversee day-to-day operations of the airport. The city issued him a take-home vehicle so he can respond to calls 24 hours a day, but the vehicle isn’t for personal use, Perry said. He said he didn’t believe there were any incidents at the airport late Sunday that would have justified Norman’s use of a city vehicle. Subscribe Now Albuquerque Journal
